Sii Ashoona

One original hand-carved sculpture by Inuit artist, Sii Ashoona. One caribou carved out of serpentine and antler.

Born in 1967 (Cape Dorset, Nunavut)

Sii Ashoona is a fourth generation artist in the Ashoona family. He grew up in Kinngait alongside Shuvinai Ashoona, Goota Ashoona and Napachie Ashoona. Coming from a family of artists, he was introduced to the art world from a young age. Sii creates a variety of sculptures with more traditional themes ranging from dancing animals to shamans and Sedna.

Ashoona carves in the local stone called serpentine. It is a very hard metamorphic rock indigenous to Baffin Island, with a structure similar to jade. The colour of the stone varies from light green to brown or even black.
