Robert Oshutsiaq

One original hand-carved sculpture by Inuit artist, Robert Oshutsiaq. One inukshuk carved out of serpentine.

Born June 17th, 1994 (Iqaluit, Nunavut) – Passed away November 24, 2022

Robert Oshutsiaq lived in Kinngait, Nunavut for a short time and later on he and his family moved to Kazabazua, Quebec. Robert loved fishing on the Gatineau River and made many friends while living there.

Robert was influenced by various well-known sculptors when it came to sculpting Insukhuks. He primarily carved serpentine, a local stone found in open pit mines in Nunavut. Serpentine is a rock similar in composition to jade. Just like jade, it is a very hard stone, so it takes a lot of artistic vitality to carve it.

Robert’s pieces have a great sense of movement and respect the traditional Inuit style of carving.
