Ooloosie Saila

Born in 1991, Cape Dorset

Ooloosie Saila, also known as the youngest artist on our list of emerging artists, was, since her childhood, motivated to draw by the presence of her close friend’s grandmother, the celebrated artist Kenojuak Ashevak.

During these visits, Saila was introduced to an environment that allowed her to develop her drawing skills and sharpness in the use of color and composition, as well as appreciate the importance of hard work. Ooloosie is also the offspring of Pauta Saila, a celebrated sculptor and graphic artist.

Saila was employed at the Kinngait Studios in 2015. Her work is characterized by its multifaceted nature, with a splendid emphasis on the northern landscape and wildlife.

The Cape Dorset Annual Print Collection of 2017 showcased Saila’s work for the first time. Feheley Fine Arts showcased Saila’s artwork at Art Toronto 2017, while the Montreal Museum of Fine arts purchased one of her landscape drawings. Her appearance at Feheley Fine Arts’ Art on Paper fair in New York in 2018 was a result of her success. Although she is relatively young, this graphic artist still attracts attention from both Canadian and international collector markets.
