Jarrod Saunders, a third-generation artist from the Nuxalk Nation (Bella Coola, Canada), is deeply rooted in the artistic traditions of his heritage. Carving for over 20 years, Jarrod received the traditional name ‘Nusmata’ from his Grandfather and master, Silyas Saunders, honoring his familial legacy and artistic lineage.

Embracing innovation alongside tradition, Jarrod has diversified his creative pursuits to include graphic design, clothing, and stretched glicee prints. His mission is to democratize First Nations art, making it accessible to a wider audience. Drawing from his extensive training under multiple masters, Jarrod’s contemporary style is characterized by its modernity, vibrancy, and distinctiveness.

In his artwork, Jarrod seamlessly blends traditional motifs with contemporary elements, creating pieces that resonate with both the past and the present. His designs often feature bold colors, intricate patterns, and symbolic imagery, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the Northwest Coast Indigenous peoples.

Currently based in Victoria, BC, on unceded WS’ANEC’, Lkwungen, and Wyomilth territories, Jarrod continues to push the boundaries of indigenous artistry. Through his innovative approach and dedication to preserving and evolving his cultural traditions.
