Elijah Kavik

Elijah Kavik is an Inuit artist from Sanikiluaq, a remote community located on the Belcher Islands in southeastern Hudson Bay. He is known for his whimsical animal carvings—most often fish, but occasionally other traditional subjects—and works exclusively in soapstone, the primary material used by artists in the region.

Sanikiluaq is recognized for its unique artistic voice, shaped by its geographic isolation and strong cultural traditions. The grey soapstone found in the area is soft and workable, ideal for the fluid lines and playful character seen in Kavik’s work.

His sculptures offer a lighthearted and joyful interpretation of Inuit life and imagination, blending tradition with creativity.
