Buddy Nutik Alikanik
Born April 4, 1969 (Ulukhaktok), Nunavut
Buddy grew up and still resides in Ulukhaktok, formerly known as Holman. His artistic prowess extends across multiple mediums, including printmaking and carving. Buddy’s preferred material for carving is Muskox horn, a choice he makes with great care, as he meticulously shapes it into his envisioned forms. Renowned for his intricate depictions of cranes, each piece is crafted with a keen eye for detail, capturing the graceful movements and intricate features of these majestic birds.
The Ulukhaktok region, known for its vast muskoxen population, serves as both inspiration and a readily available resource for Buddy’s artistry. Drawing from the rich cultural heritage of his community, he infuses his work with a profound reverence for nature and tradition.
Beyond his artistic pursuits, Buddy, like many of his fellow residents, enjoys the traditional activities of hunting and fishing, further deepening his connection to the land and its inhabitants.
