Matthew Tikivik
Born in Kimmirut, Nunavut
Matthew Tikivik lives in Kimmirut, on the south shore of Baffin Island’s Meta Incognita Peninsula. The access to this community is restricted to air and water. He was therefore raised in a very traditional way. Kimmirut hosts a thriving arts community and is famous for its beautiful local stone, the serpentine. Sculptures from this region are highly representational, with naturalistic animal subjects that are smooth and usually polished. Therefore, it’s no doubt that Kolala learned how to carve very young.
Matthew Tikivik sculpt with serpentine, a very hard stone from the same family as jade. Matthew then adds details, if needed, to his sculptures in Caribou Antler.
