Danny Ohiktook
Born in Taloyoak, Nunavut
Danny Ohitook is an Inuit artist from Nunavut. His unique community is defined by the strength of the people and the ruggedness of the land. Formerly called Spence Bay, Taloyoak is surrounded by Inuit culture, traditions, stories and, of course, the wildlife. Danny’s transformation pieces are reminiscent of the carvings done by artists from his community.
Danny sculpts primarily with a stone called basalt. Basalt is a volcanic stone, therefore it is very hard to sculpt. His style is simple and primitive. The artist also like to add to some of his pieces detailed eyes. In fact, sometimes he inlays caribou antler for the eyes.
