Ooloopie Killiktee
Ooloopie Killiktee (B. 1891) is an Inuit artist from Kimmirut, NU. This community, situated in the south of the Baffin Island, has a population of 426 (according to the 2021 Canadian Census).
Ooloopie was named after his grandfather, who passed shortly before his birth. In Inuit communities, children born soon after someone’s death may take on the name of the deceased.
Having grown up around carvers, Ooloopie began training at a young age. He has been carving for nearly 20 years. He mostly carves stone, and focuses on animal and human subjects. His favourite subject, like many artists, is the polar bear. His style is distinct and his figures are known for their large, round eyes.
