Allan Shutiapik
Born in Kinngait (Cape Dorset), Nunavut
Allan Shutiapik specializes in carving marble and serpentine, locally sourced stones from open-pit mines in Nunavut. Serpentine, similar to jade, is known for its hardness, requiring considerable artistic skill to carve.
His sculptures reflect a dynamic sense of movement and honor the traditional Inuit carving style, influenced by his father’s techniques learned at home.
Preferring the traditional approach, Allan personally selects stones from open-pit mines on Baffin Island. He carefully chooses the finest serpentine, known for its vibrant green hues.
After selecting the stone, Allan meticulously shapes and polishes it to enhance its natural brilliance. Despite the challenges of working with such a hard material, Allan’s dedication to his craft is evident in each sculpture he creates.
