Joseph Nalukturuk
Joseph Nalukturuk is a carver from Port Harrison, Inukjuak.
Joseph’s sculptural style is a combination of naturalism, observation and reduction to sometimes abstract stylistic forms.
This artist prides himself on sculpting in the traditional way; by collecting his own stones that he found on Baffin Island. Joseph usually sculpts with serpentine, a very hard stone found in strip mines. Serpentine is a rock similar in composition to jade. Just like jade, it is a very hard stone, so it takes a lot of artistic vitality to carve it.
