Mauk Lola Pitsiulak was born in Kimmirut, Nunavut.

Kimmirut is a considerably smaller community than Cape Dorset. Kimmirut artists generally sculpt animals and hunters. Pitsiulak is an Inuit art sculptor who makes his living mainly from the land, hunting and fishing.

Pitsiulak’s sculptural style is a combination of naturalism, observation and reduction to expressive stylistic forms.

This artist prides himself on sculpting in the traditional way; by collecting his own stones that he finds in open-air mines on Baffin Island. He primarily carves marble or serpentine, a local stone found in the strip mines of Nunavut. Serpentine is a rock similar in composition to jade. Just like jade, it is a very hard stone, so it takes a lot of artistic vitality to carve it.
