According to Inuit legend, Sedna was a beautiful young woman who refused every suitor who sought her hand. Determined to secure her future, her father arranged for her to marry a mysterious shaman who lived on a distant island. Before long, he heard his daughter’s cries carried across the sea and, filled with regret, set out to bring her home.

As they crossed the icy waters by kayak, the enraged shaman summoned a storm. Sedna was swept into the sea, where she descended to the depths of the Arctic Ocean. There, she was transformed into the powerful Sea Goddess, ruler of all marine life.

Today, Sedna remains one of the most important figures in Inuit mythology. As guardian of the ocean and its creatures, she symbolizes the profound relationship between the Inuit people and the sea, reminding us of the respect, balance, and gratitude that sustain life in the Arctic.
