Lazarus Malliki was born in 1978 in Repulse Bay (Naujaat), Nunavut, a small coastal community on the western shore of Hudson Bay known for its strong carving tradition and deep connection to the land and sea. Life in Naujaat is closely tied to nature, hunting, and seasonal travel on the tundra—elements that continue to inspire Lazarus’ work.

He is the younger brother of the renowned Inuit sculptor Paul Malliki, one of the most respected carvers from the region. Lazarus learned the fundamentals of carving through observing and working alongside his brother, who has guided and encouraged many artists in the community. Through this mentorship, he developed both technical skill and a strong understanding of traditional Inuit sculptural forms.

Like many artists from Naujaat, Lazarus maintains a close relationship with the land. Hunting and time spent on the tundra play an important role in his life and artistic inspiration, influencing the subjects and spirit of his sculptures.

Working with challenging materials such as basalt and local stone, Lazarus creates pieces that convey strength, movement, and a deep respect for the Arctic environment. His sculptures reflect both the artistic heritage of his family and the enduring cultural traditions of his community.
