Johnny Saggiatuk

Born in Kinngait (Cape Dorset), Nunavut

Johnny Saggiatuk is an Inuit sculptor from Kinngait, Nunavut, widely regarded as one of the most important artistic centers in the Arctic. Living close to the land, he maintains a strong connection to traditional Inuit life, spending much of his time hunting and traveling on the land—experiences that deeply inform his artistic practice.

Saggiatuk is particularly recognized for his striking carvings of bears. His sculptures are highly stylized yet grounded in careful observation of the animal, capturing both the power and grace of the Arctic’s most iconic predator. His works are distinguished by their sense of movement and balance, with dynamic poses that bring the forms to life.

A defining aspect of Saggiatuk’s work is his exceptional selection of stone. He frequently carves richly colored serpentine from Baffin Island, choosing pieces whose natural variations enhance the character of each sculpture. The polish and depth of the stone give his bears a luminous quality that complements their sculptural presence.

Great attention is given to the details of the paws, musculature, and facial expression, elements that reveal the artist’s sensitivity and technical skill. Through this balance of stylization, movement, and refined craftsmanship, Johnny Saggiatuk continues the strong carving traditions of Kinngait while contributing a distinctive voice to contemporary Inuit sculpture.
