Celestine Aleck

Celestine Aleck descends from the Snuneymuxw First Nation, a Coast Salish community located in and around Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Rooted in a culture that has thrived in this region for over 5,000 years, Celestine carries forward the stories, teachings, and artistic traditions of her people.

An artist for most of her life, Celestine has developed a distinctive creative voice shaped by both knowledge and imagination. Her writing reflects a deep respect for history, learning the facts, honoring oral traditions, and then weaving them together with storytelling that brings spirit and imagery to life. Inspired by the natural beauty of her coastal homeland, the forests, waters, and wildlife of Snuneymuxw territory—her stories resonate with cultural strength, place-based identity, and personal insight.

Alongside her writing career, Celestine is also an accomplished carver. Her sculptural works draw from Coast Salish visual language and reflect her connection to land and ancestry. Through carving, she expresses form, movement, and story in three dimensions, transforming wood and other materials into meaningful works that embody both tradition and contemporary presence.

Whether through the written word or through carving, Celestine Aleck’s work bridges generations. Her practice is a testament to the enduring vitality of Snuneymuxw culture—honoring the past while shaping its expression for today’s audience.
